About Jim Parker

“There are no limitations to the mind except those that we acknowledge.” Napoleon Hill

Some History:

Two important books to me:
The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil – The concept of humans transending biology is what I consider to be a new belief system for today, but that which will have a profound effect on humanity in the future. (lots of future blog topics to come from this)

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. – again, another belief system which is summed up by the secret in the title.

Blogs that have influenced me:
Mistersugar – by Anton Zuiker, a college buddy. It’s the first blog I ever read. And it opened my eyes to the world of blogging, open source software, and contribution. (thanks Anton!)

Avc – by Fred Wilson. The first VC blog I ever read. I remember being amazed by the fact that all these people were giving away the bank. “Why would these people be giving away all of their ideas like that?”, I often thought. Now I understand.

BubbleGeneration – by Umair Haque. I am always intrigued by people who attempt to tell what the future will hold. Umair is no exception. He has opened my eyes to what I have always felt was true, but could never put together in a coherent thought process. Umair has very effectively wrapped up the dynamics of the changing economics of media into a very potable discipline.

  1. Hi Jim,

Just wondering how you’re doing out there in Cyberspace. I just read an article about how Second Life is helping Autistic people, very interesting. I’ve been TOO busy lately but I haven’t totally forgotten about you. I’ll catch up with you sometime soon.

You should check out John Hagel if you haven’t, he’s The Source for a lot of Umair’s thought patters:

Avatars as Our Agents

Avatars will become our agents, handling all contacts with the world when we don’t want to or when we can’t.
We can’t be everywhere all of the time.  But we want to be.  Back in the day, we purchased answering machines, and then voice mail.  These were (are) a very simple way of communicating to anyone […]

Future Ubiquities

As a little girl, my grandmother rode a horse drawn wagon to the church on Sunday’s in the early 1920’s.  Today, at 94, she has a machine that keeps her heart beating reliably and is about to fly via jetliner across the country in a matter of hours to visit children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
That’s a […]

Flood Waters in the Midwest

This is a bit off topic for this blog, but significant nevertheless for me. I’m from St. Louis Missouri, where area rivers are overflowing their banks. I have extensive pictures posted at my flickr account which can be found here: Jim Parker ’s Flickr

Two are better than One

Uma, my wife, is almost 28 weeks with twins.  We’ve got at least 7-8 more weeks to go.  (we are shooting for July 15th - but of course, the actual date is yet to be determined - full term is August 12th.)  It’s fun watching her tummy change shapes as the babies move around inside […]
