About Jim Parker

“There are no limitations to the mind except those that we acknowledge.” Napoleon Hill

Some History:

Two important books to me:
The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil – The concept of humans transending biology is what I consider to be a new belief system for today, but that which will have a profound effect on humanity in the future. (lots of future blog topics to come from this)

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. – again, another belief system which is summed up by the secret in the title.

Blogs that have influenced me:
Mistersugar – by Anton Zuiker, a college buddy. It’s the first blog I ever read. And it opened my eyes to the world of blogging, open source software, and contribution. (thanks Anton!)

Avc – by Fred Wilson. The first VC blog I ever read. I remember being amazed by the fact that all these people were giving away the bank. “Why would these people be giving away all of their ideas like that?”, I often thought. Now I understand.

BubbleGeneration – by Umair Haque. I am always intrigued by people who attempt to tell what the future will hold. Umair is no exception. He has opened my eyes to what I have always felt was true, but could never put together in a coherent thought process. Umair has very effectively wrapped up the dynamics of the changing economics of media into a very potable discipline.

  1. Hi Jim,

Just wondering how you’re doing out there in Cyberspace. I just read an article about how Second Life is helping Autistic people, very interesting. I’ve been TOO busy lately but I haven’t totally forgotten about you. I’ll catch up with you sometime soon.

US Senators, a Vice President, a Camera Man, and a Cop

Former US Senator from Missouri Tom Eagleton passed away March 4th.
I was raised a Democrat so when I was a kid, in 1980, when my mother was working for his campaign, I met him. I vaguely remember the fund raising event.
Over the years, through my mother’s connections (and some of my own) I’ve gotten […]

When VR is AR: Family Style

(or when virtual reality becomes actual reality)
I had a conversation with a close body a couple of weeks ago about how Virtual Reality (VR) will enhance the family experience.  His argument was “Why would anybody want to spend any time in an area that just wasn’t real?  I’d rather have real life than a made […]

Two are better than One

Uma, my wife, is almost 28 weeks with twins.  We’ve got at least 7-8 more weeks to go.  (we are shooting for July 15th - but of course, the actual date is yet to be determined - full term is August 12th.)  It’s fun watching her tummy change shapes as the babies move around inside […]

Who Reinvents the Firm?

One of my favorites, Umair Haque, (who is now writing at hbs too) wrote the following last week in a blog entry:
“That feeling - like a dull toothache - is a massively powerful heuristic that something is deeply wrong; wrong with McJobs; wrong with $100m bonuses for value destruction; wrong with the evisceration of variety, […]
